Treaty Commissioner of Saskatchewan
Dr. Kathy Walker (wiya*/she) is nêhiyaw iskwêw and grew up on the Okanese First Nation in Treaty Four territory and is currently the Treaty Commissioner for the Treaty territories known as Saskatchewan. She is a proud partner, mother, auntie and kokum (great aunt) who has spent most of her professional life working for First Nations governments, in academia and for non-profits, and most recently, worked as an Assistant Professor in Political Studies at the University of Saskatchewan. A lifelong learner, she holds multiple degrees and works to strengthen her understanding of the deep, sophisticated knowledge systems contained in nêhiyaw kiskêyihtamowin.
Her work is informed by her lived experience and commitment to advancing education, policy and community development grounded in the resurgence of Plains First Nations governance, including Treaty governance as understood by First Nation oral traditions, histories and kisêyiniwak or ‘Elders.’
Dr. Walker also is currently working to learn nêhiyawêwin (the Plains Cree language).
